What is Precision Injection Molding
Precision injection molding is a plastic forming process centered on "high-precision", aiming to manufacture plastic parts with minimal dimensional tolerances and stable performance through precise control of the entire production process. Different from the extensive production of ordinary injection molding, it integrates the pursuit of "millimeter-level" precision into every link, including mold design, material selection, and parameter adjustment, making it a key technical support for high-end manufacturing fields such as electronics, medical, and aerospace.
Its process principle can be simplified as "melting filling - precise curing": first, granular plastic raw materials are heated to a molten state in the injection molding machine barrel, and the melt is injected into a pre-fabricated precision mold cavity with constant pressure (typically 80-150MPa) through a high-precision screw. Subsequently, it is cooled and solidified in an accurately temperature-controlled environment (temperature fluctuation within ±1℃), and finally, the molded product is taken out after opening the mold. Throughout the process, mold accuracy and parameter control are the core to achieve "precision" - mold processing tolerances are often controlled within 0.01mm, and molds for some optical components even reach the micron level. Parameters such as temperature, pressure, and cooling time during injection need to be real-time adjusted by the PLC control system, like installing an "intelligent brain" for the machine to ensure every product replicates the details of the design drawings.
The key elements of precision injection molding are reflected in three dimensions: first is mold manufacturing accuracy, adopting precision processes such as slow wire electrical discharge machining and electro-discharge machining, combined with full-size inspection by a coordinate measuring machine. For example, the mold for a mobile phone lens module requires the cavity surface roughness to be below Ra0.2 to ensure lens light transmittance; second is equipment performance, high-precision injection molding machines are equipped with a servo motor drive system, and the screw metering accuracy error is less than 0.5%. For instance, the precision model of German Arburg can achieve 0.001mm-level injection volume control; third is environmental control, production needs to be carried out in a constant temperature and humidity workshop (temperature 23±2℃, humidity 45%±5kshop (temperature 23±2℃, humidity 45%±5%) to avoid dimensional deviations caused by environmental fluctuations, and the medical field even requires production in a class 10,000 cleanroom.
This process is applied in multiple high-end scenarios: in the electronics industry, it is used to manufacture the housing of RF connectors for 5G base stations, requiring dimensional tolerances of ±0.03mm to fit precise circuits; in medical equipment, the piston component of an insulin pen achieves a 0.01mm fit clearance through precision injection molding to ensure accurate drug injection dosage; in the automotive industry, the battery connectors of new energy vehicles are formed by precision injection molding, which while meeting the IP67 waterproof rating, realizes integrated design of conductivity and structure through embedded metal inserts. Taking the case of a smartwatch shell, precision injection molding can integrally form an aluminum alloy insert with PC material, with a dimensional error of less than 0.05mm, while achieving a 1.5mm ultra-thin wall thickness and surface mirror effect.
With the advancement of engineering plastics technology, the application of high-temperature and high-strength materials such as PEEK and PPS has enabled precision injection molding to break through the performance boundaries of traditional plastic parts. For example, the satellite antenna cover in the aerospace field, the PEI material component formed by precision injection molding can not only withstand extreme temperatures from -100℃ to 200℃ but also maintain a geometric tolerance of 0.02mm. The advantage of this process lies in replacing traditional machining with large-scale production. The cost of a precision injection-molded part for a mobile phone middle frame can be 60% lower than CNC machining, while the production efficiency is increased by more than 3 times, making it an important path for high-end manufacturing to achieve "precision, intelligence, and low-cost" production.
